What is your favorite color

That is a question my kids ask a lot. In general, lots of questions about colors. The importance of colors appears in a lot of daily activities as a parent. This month’s IndieWeb Carnival is about colors and I generally don’t think about colors much myself, but my two daughters does all the time, so I decided to write a little about that.

I don’t really know what my favorite color is, but I just say green when my kids ask. Which can then be followed up by a “do you hate <other color>?” They also enjoy various color-related games like a “I spy” where we have to guess a specific object of certain color. Somehow the concept of boy- and girl colors has materialized for them, which we try our best to dismiss. When they make drawings or paint in coloring books, we can be certain they want our opinions on which colors to choose. Of course, their personal style in clothing can best be summarized as “unicorn rainbow”.

Before kids, there wasn’t a whole lot of color in our home. Both my wife and I prefer wooden furniture, white walls, and neutral muted colors in clothes. Now there is all kinds of toys, teddy bears, pencils, beads and just “stuff” in all the colors of the rainbow everywhere in the house.

Which is totally cool. The minimalist design trend was a little dreary.
